An alliance of several drug-political organizations proposes the former SPD member of the Bundestag Burkhard Blienert as the new federal drug commissioner.
Burkhard Blienert was a member of the SPD Bundestag from 2013 to 2017. He was a spokesman for drug policy and a member of the health committee. Blienert has been passionate about the introduction of the Cannabis Act 2017.
Since Marlene Mortler (CSU), the former federal drug commissioner, was elected to the European Parliament in May this year, there is no successor to this function. The position has been vacant for months.
In a joint action, several drug policy associations are now recommending the appointment of former SPD MP Burkhard Blienert.
He is to continue the function in the current parliamentary term.
The following are represented in the organisation:
- LEAP Law Enforcement Against Prohibition
- Schildower Kreis
- Deutscher Hanfverband
- Knowmad Institut
In a joint press release, the parties stress their commitment to health promotion, prevention, education, the protection of minors and the further development of drug policies, and to provide the Office of the Federal Drugs Commissioner with expertise and closeness to the to support those affected.
